Rag Doll Museum – Rock Garden Chandigarh

This is part-2 of my first blog “Chandigarh Diaries” on my hometown – “Chandigarh-The City Beautiful”. In the month of Feb,2018, I took my friend who visited from USA on city tour. Been to rock garden multiple times but this was first time after the inauguration of “Rag Dolls Museum” last year.

My friend and I captured some nice shots using our mobile only, which I thought to share with everyone.  Just small introduction about the place before the captured photos.

Rag Dolls Museum – Rock Garden, Chandigarh

On the Second death anniversary { June 12th, 2017 } of Rock Garden’s creator Nek Chand, UT {CHANDIGARH} administrator “V P Singh Badnore” inaugurated “Rag Dolls Museum” at Phase III of the Rock Garden-Chandigarh.

The whole museum is based on Village theme, where day to day activities have been showcased through these Rag Dolls. This Doll museum comprises of 200+ rag dolls made from waste cloth by Nek Chand in 1970s. Besides dolls, artificial trees and huts have also been installed to give more realistic village scene.

The village scene depicts the women and men cooking on a chuhla and artificial trees and huts  are installed. Also, there is a exhibition on Nek Chand and making of the garden. The museum also displays documentaries and short films related to their work, tools, cycle, old pictures, awards and other belongings.

Ladies singing, dancing on local folks songs and enjoying the swing rides (also called Peeng in Punjabi)…

Two Ladies making the cow-dung cakes which on drying they use as fuel in Chuhlaas for cooking or other household works…

Dinner Scene – where all family male members are sitting together and the ladies are serving food to them…

Scene depicting probably the Basant Kite Festival in Punjab, which is seasonal festival marking the commencement of the Spring Season…

Scene of Marriage { Baraat } in Village, where the Bridegroom is going for his wedding along with relatives and friends, much similar can be seen in the cities as well although people in cities have other traditions as well…

Local Ladies pulling water out of the well and filling their earthen pots… Today as well there are many villages in India where drinking water is still not available and people have to use Well water for drinking as well as other household activities…

Different sources of education available in Villages…

Shopkeeper selling Hand-fans, these Hand Fans are made by village Ladies. These are purely handicrafts accept its handle, which is made of wood. It also shows the  craftsmanship capabilities of people in villages where they do not have proper education facilities available to them, still they are way more talented than most of the city people…

 A Scene of Gram Panchaayat, where there is no court or law available still in villages, the senior (Sarpanch) and five most respected people are the decision making body. They make decision for any dispute or any issue in their village…
